Musique Muse End Of Year Awards | Best Collaboration

Runner - Up: Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande with Bang Bang
Three powerful, talented and successful women coming together to make a song is pretty much unheard of, so Bang Bang brought a welcome change to the music industry. Ari and Jessie's vocals are on point and Nicki adds a flare of fun and attitude to the song. Although it is overplayed at this point, I remember my first time hearing it and being really impressed with the melody and promiscuous yet commercially sell-able lyrics.

Winner : Beyonce feat. Nicki Minaj with Flawless Remix
It's a double whammy for Nicki as she features on both the runner up and winning track proving that maybe it is her presence on a track that brings it to life.
Undoubtedly, these are the two best females in music at the moment and when they came together for this remix it had everyone talking. The lyrics are both witty and clever and Beyonce proves she can not only sing but she has learnt a thing or two from her hubby about rapping.
The original song was amazing but this remix takes it to the next level.

Musique Muse End Of Year Awards | Best Female Artist

Runner Up : Ariana Grande
It has been another great year for the 21 year old who dominated the charts with some of the biggest singles of 2014. Problem, Break Free and her feature on Bang Bang has made her a household name as well as her outstanding voice and her relationship with Big Sean.

Winner : Beyonce
There was no doubt that Queen Beyonce won all elements of 2014. From the very start of the year she broke records and made headlines with her self-titled album that produced success after success including Drunk In Love and Flawless. Her On The Run tour with Jay-Z raked in the cash and her performances at the AMA's and the Grammy's made award season worth watching.

Musique Muse End Of Year Awards | Best Male Artist

Runner-Up : Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran has had a couple of great years after becoming a big name star in America and a 'national treasure' in the UK. It is well deserved as Ed has undeniable talent as a musician and his song writing skills have created some of the most powerful love songs ever.
This year his collaboration with Pharrell brought us Sing and his solo efforts delivered a hugely successful and well constructed album with other brilliant singles such as Thinking Out Loud and Don't.

Winner : Chris Brown
Personally, it hasn't been a great year for Chris who went to prison, broke up/got back together/broke up with his ex (i think) girlfriend Karreuche and had many public spats with fellow artists such as Drake and Tamar Braxton.
But if we put his personal life aside, Chris Brown has had a very strong and successful year in the music industry. He has, in fact, had a great year musically almost every year since his debut single Run It eight years ago.
His album may not have been his best but it has produced hit after hit such as New Flame and Loyal and he is on all of the biggest collaborations. You can't deny the boy is talented and doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon.

Musique Muse End Of Year Awards | Best New Artist

Runner Up : Tinashe
This year has been the breakout year for Tinashe who was a virtually unknown singer 12 months ago. But she burst onto the scene at the start of the year with her commercially successful club track 2 On and became an Instagram favourite.
Her album was a pleasant surprise because it sounded nothing like her debut single, which is a fun and catchy song, but her album provided more depth and creativity that showcased her talents as both a singer and songwriter. Tinashe is definitely not just another pretty faced popstar trying her luck at music - she is a real talent and I have a feeling she will really rise in 2015.

Winner : Jhene Aiko
It has been a long road for the singer/songwriter Jhene Aiko who was only really known as a feature artist on Drake songs up until this past year. After many critically acclaimed mixtapes, Jhene finally gave us an album and she didn't disappoint.
It remained true to her soulful and emotional sound and didn't try to tap in to any mainstream success which is what made it even more enjoyable. It was real and honest and different - it shone amongst an industry filled with autotune and sell outs.
She has made a name for herself internationally and I cannot wait to see what the new year brings, hopefully a follow up album.

Has Hip-Hop Fallen Victim To White Privilege?

Iggy Azalea

Last week Harlem rapper Azealia Banks went on the Hot 97 morning show and spent near enough the whole 40 minutes talking about her feelings towards Iggy Azalea and that state of hip hop music today. She cried, she ranted and she struck up a very heated debate, specifically aimed towards Iggy, amongst rappers and hip hop fans that has dominated media news and twitter for the past week.
J.Cole, Will.I.Am, Q-tip, T.I, Solange Knowles, Lupe Fiasco and many more have all had something to say on the matter, as do I.

This whole Azealia Banks/Iggy Azalea fued started many years ago before either of them were charting on Billboard or circulating on the radio. Many believe it isn't just a coincidence that they share the same name. Iggy is accused of taking Azealia's name to fire up her rap career and considering she debuted a little after Banks it could have some truth to it.
But it was a questionable lyric in one of Iggy's Youtube videos that got Azealia all riled up and I don't particularly blame her. I know rap is all about controversy and playing on words but for Iggy to call herself a 'runaway slave master' wasn't all that impressive. Now I don't know Iggy personally but I would be very shocked if I found out that she is racist in anyway.
However, Azealia was offended, and rightly so, she called her out on it and from that day forward the girls have not had a kind word to say about each other.

Azealia Banks
I believe that there is more than a hint of bitterness in Azealia's hatred towards Iggy because the two girls started around the same time and their around the same age but Iggy is the only one getting number one singles and Grammy nominations when Azealia is far more talented than the Australian rapper. So race aside, there was always going to be some jealousy on Azealia's part.
But throw in the fact that Iggy is white and born in Australia, it rubs a whole lot more salt in the wound because, as Azealia has stated many a time, Iggy is not what hip hop culture is about and she is taking that away from black people.

Now I can completely understand and appreciate Azealia's argument as I was one of the many hip hop fans who was deeply frustrated when Macklemore stole a Grammy from Kendrick last year. It would be equally upsetting if Iggy walks away with Grammy's that she doesn't deserve over some really talented rappers/artists.
I am not saying that Iggy isn't talented because she is a great popstar but just because she 'raps' it does not make her a rapper or a hip hop artist. Her music, by definition, is commercially successful pop music so, by definition, she should be competing with the Taylor Swifts and Katy Perrys certainly not the Nicki Minajs and Azealia Banks.
Iggy may be a hip hop fan and appreciate the culture but she is not technically a part of it based on her debut album filled with everything but inspiring, original hip-hop music.
I know people often bring Eminem into this argument. Why is he accepted? Why does he get a pass? Well, to put it simply, because he is one of the best rappers and lyricists of all time regardless of his skin colour. Besides, he was raised within the culture, competing in rap battles and such, he is not appropriating black culture. Whereas, Iggy gets all of this flack because she is from a white privileged background and she isn't all that great of a rapper. If Iggy was making great hip-hop music and writing high quality lyrics then I doubt that this debate would have ever happened because we would have to give her credit and respect for being amazingly talented just like we do for Eminem and Justin Timberlake. We don't even really consider the colour of their skin even though they compete in genres built and dominated by black people because they are great at what they do and musicians respect other great musicians. Unfortunately Iggy is not a talented artist within the genre mainstream society have placed her in.
That being said, Iggy has never claimed to be a hip-hop star and it isn't her fault that she is put in these categories for awards and then wins them. Just as Macklemore shouldn't get the blame for winning the Grammy.

So, on the one hand, I strongly agree with the point that Azealia is making; HOWEVER, why is this all being put on Iggy's shoulders.
At the end of the day, she is just a 24 year old musician trying to make some money by following her dream and all of a sudden she is at the centre of a race row.
One white woman is not going to erase the decades of history hip-hop has engraved in music culture and she is certainly not trying to do that either - well, at least not consciously.
I am hard pressed to believe that when Iggy moved to America all them years ago her aim was to change the face of hip-hop music by making it a 'white thing'. I am sure she is aware of the challenges she would face because of her race and I am sure she wanted to open a few doors for other aspiring white rappers. But she not only seems to embrace the black culture, she has unarguably introduced it to a new audience.

So all in all, Azealia Banks makes some great points and I was glad to see that she was so passionate about the issue she calls 'cultural smudging'. She has sparked an interesting debate that I have found to be both educational and thought-provoking. But can we please see the conversation, and that same passion, being aimed at everything else that demeans the black race and our culture, which isn't necessarily Iggy Azalea.
J.Cole sums it up best on a line from his latest album. On the song Fire Squad, J raps 'watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile' which is most definitely a premonition based on last years awards season. He quickly follows this lyric with 'I'm just playing' but then backtracks once again by stating that there is some truth in every joke. J.Cole's sentiment is the exact same as mine - if I am right in assuming I understand how he feels about the topic based on these lyrics.
Yes, it is annoying, frustrating and upsetting to watch pop artists, who just so happen to rap, win awards and accolades ahead of real, talented and authentic hip hop artists. It must be even more blood-boiling when you are that artist losing out seemingly based on white privilege.
But I am not going to get worked up to the point of twitter ranting and publicly crying over a few white people who rap with successful music careers because there are far more important issues I can be concerning myself with.
Instead of complaining about Iggy, why don't we keep our focus and attention on the cases of Eric Garner and Mike Brown.
Instead of debating Grammy awards, why don't we discuss the issue of inequality in the prison system and the prejudice in the educational system.
Maybe if we addressed the more concerning, life-threatening issues that black people all over the world face every day, our worries about great black artists being underrated and the hip hop culture being 'erased' won't exist anymore.

New Video | The Pinkprint Movie

To celebrate the release of her third album The Pinkprint, which is set to be a huge success, Nicki made a 16 minute long 'short movie' featuring a few tracks from the album.
I suppose I was expecting a massive production, a bit of choreography, some epic costumes and full-scale production with a mix of uptempo songs and ballads, and that would have been entertaining and fun and very Nicki. However, she took a different and equally interesting route and decided to put together three music videos that all told one story.
She used her three big ballads The Crying Game, I Lied and Grand Piano as the soundtrack to the story which seems to be heavily based on her own tumultuous and recently deceased relationship with Safaree.
Nicki proves she has acting chops throughout this emotional video, alongside the likes of Boris Kodjoe, and keeps the extravagance to a minimum which makes a welcome change.
It may not be to everyone's tastes and I am sure some will be disappointed in the lack of clarity and conclusion but you can't deny that this does somewhat sell the album.

Album Review | J. Cole '2014 Forest Hills Drive'

I may be a little late with this one as J. Cole released his kind of unexpected album a little over a week ago but I only just got around to listening to it after hearing rave reviews.
As always J. Cole is reflective, honest and poignant in his discussion of everything from losing his virginity to role models in the industry to appreciating your life. J is really on top form with this album which strays away from commercial success as there are no songs which jump out to be as being 'for the radio' like his biggest hit Work Out.
This album is obviously less about making money and scoring a number one, and more about allowing J to open up about current issues and things he wants to get off his chest.
He is unapologetic in his opinion on the appropriation of black culture in Fire Squad and vulnerable in the moments where he discusses family matters and his role as a step-father on songs like Apparently and Hello. But, above everything, he is proving himself to be a real contender in the battle for the hip hop crown.

Album Highlight: Apparently and G.O.M.D.
Rating : 4/5

Album Review | Nicki Minaj 'The Pinkprint' (Deluxe Version)

Nicki has been teasing us with this hotly anticipated third album for months after pushing the date back and leaking a couple of tracks.
But now The Pinkprint is finally here and it seems to be worth the wait with an extensive 22 song tracklist and collaborations with the likes of Ariana Grande, Meek Mill and the Queen herself, Beyonce.
Here is my track-by-track review of the album which is released on Monday 15th December...

1. All Things Go
As opening tracks go, this one is quite strong even though it is a slow burner. Nicki is very reflective and honest on this song as she raps about her family and herself, including the fact that she was pregnant sixteen years ago and that she wants to have another child in the next three years.
It is always welcoming to hear the softer side of Nicki and All Things Go is a well executed attempt at that.

2. I Lied
This is a definite favourite of mine and took that spot from the very first listen. Once again, it is a slow track and explores Nicki's vulnerability as she admits that she fears letting herself be honest and fall in love with a guy because he might hurt her. It is a sentiment all women can relate to at one point or another.
This song is also the first time we hear Nicki's vocals so clearly and they sound really strong and emotional, particularly the chorus as there is something haunting about the way Nicki sings 'I lied'.

3. The Crying Game feat. Jessie Ware
The Crying Game is quite a different sound for Nicki and brings us an unexpected collaboration with Jessie Ware whose vocals are stunning on this track. Although this song doesn't immediately jump out at you, on my third listen I realised just how good of a song it really is - not a standout track but still one of the better ones.
The production, particularly on the verses, is pleasant to the ear and I would have preferred this as a single over Bed Of Lies.

4. Get On Your Knees feat. Ariana Grande
You already know what to expect from the title of the song. A very sexy and lyrically explicit song, which is always hard to buy into when coming from Ariana Grande, but not overtly sexual compared to some of Nicki's previous songs.
This track is a guilty pleasure of mine as there is something quite fun and catchy about it especially when it gets to the chorus. This song would work well as a single but maybe it is too risqué for radio.

5. Feeling Myself feat. Beyonce
I had very high expectations for this song, as does everyone else probably, because it is a Nicki and Beyonce collaboration - two of the best females at what they do.
Nicki's lyrics and flow are strong on this song in terms of being playful (for example, her closing line) and the production is quite genius. It is the first time on the album that we hear a Nicki we can instantly recognise, with her voices and multi-layered persona. Beyonce adds a certain presence and brings attitude to the song that couldn't have been matched by anyone else.
I wouldn't say this song was a let-down, because if I hadn't known about it before listening to the album I would be pleased with the outcome, but I expected something with a bit more of a lasting impact.

6. Only feat. Drake, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne
The current single that I am sure you have already heard by now - check out the video which I posted earlier this week. I am a fan of this song and if I hadn't heard it before the album dropped then it would have immediately stood out as an album highlight. It is Nicki's strongest song lyrically and with all that star power on one track it was bound to be a hit.
In the context of the album, Only really keeps the momentum of the first five songs going yet starts to tease a heavier hip-hop sound that we haven't heard so far.

7. Want Some More
If the title of this song is a question, then the answer is 'no, thank you'.
I thought I was really going to like this song based on the first 40 seconds but then, just as quickly, it began to irritate me. Nicki's flow is supposed to be playful but it irks me on this song and the chorus is just as annoying. It is disappointing because this song had potential to be the start of the hip-hop sound that Nicki had promised fans on this album.

8. Four Door Aventador
The beat and production, particularly on the chorus, reminds me so much of late 90's/early 00's female rap like Lil' Kim and Missy Elliot. It is one of the more understated songs and seems to be over before it has really started but it is enjoyable.
It also delivers hints of mixtape Nicki, which is always a very good thing, and I wish there was more music like this on the album.

9. Favorite feat. Jeremih
Unfortunately, as much as I tried to like this song, there was something not quite right with it and I'm not sure whether it is the lacklustre production or Jeremih. Don't get me wrong, he is a great artist but he misses the mark on this song and makes little impact leaving me thinking it may have been better suited for Trey or August.
Nicki delivers everything she should on the verses even with a dull and underproduced beat underneath her. But, if this song was hoping to be the next Right By My Side then it has failed miserably.

10. Buy A Heart feat. Meek Mill
I actually really enjoy this song as it delivers on every aspect - the beat is good as is the production and Meek's opening verse.
The song has three different layers to it as the melody changes from the opening to the mid-section to the very final few seconds and it pulls that off well without sounding all over the place (unlike Want Some More). It isn't strong enough to be a single and gets lost amongst some of the bigger, more impactful songs but it is a subtle gem.

11.Trini Dem Girls feat. Lunchmoney Lewis
I expected this to be Nicki's mandatory dancehall-inspired track, which are usually high energy, catchy, standout songs on her album. Unfortunately, this song doesn't quite stick with me. The chorus gives the song potential but that gets ruined on the watered down verses and hook that make this sound way too pop. I wish there had been an authentic Caribbean sound and Nicki had thrown in her Trini accent for good measure.

12. Anaconda
I have never been a fan of this song and, wedged right in the middle of this album, it doesn't belong at all. I was hoping this was just a bit of fun and Nicki would keep it off the album or just throw it on as a bonus track but it takes centre stage where it falls completely flat and feels totally out of place.
I can see the humour and it would probably be a dance floor filler at a club filled with drunk people but, as a serious rapper and artist, Nicki can surely see why this is more suited on previous albums.

13. The Night Is Still Young
This is by far my least favourite song on the album and possibly my least favourite Nicki song ever. This is the commercial, cheesy pop music that I thought Nicki was steering clear of on this album and  yet it makes an unwelcome appearance.
There is nothing redeeming about this track which sounds like a Katy Perry reject song.

14. Pills and Potions
Although this single didn't do so well commercially, and seemed to disappoint critics and some fans, I enjoyed this song and still do.
As I said earlier, it is always nice to hear the softer side of Ms. Minaj and even if the chorus leaves much to be desired lyrically, you can't deny that it is catchy and you'll probably have it playing in the aftermath of a break-up.

15. Bed of Lies feat. Skylar Grey
I was so disappointed in this as a single with its sub-par, metaphorical chorus and boring piano melody. I lose interest in a matter of seconds and maybe that is partially to do with the fact that I am not much of a Skylar Grey fan either.

16. Grand Piano
The first and only track where Nicki solely sings, which may not go down well with hardcore hip-hop fans, but I like the sentiment behind the song. The orchestral elements are stunning but I can't help but imagine how perfect the song would have sounded with a vocalist like Ariana Grande or Beyonce.
It isn't that Nicki can't sing but when handed a ballad such as this maybe she should stick to what she does best.

17. Big Daddy feat. Meek Mill
I am still unsure with this song because up until I played it in the car last night, I really didn't like it. This may mean that it is best listened to on loud speakers at full volume.
Nicki is back to her feisty rap alter ego and delivers confident verses with Meek executing a standard catchy hook that is borderline annoying.
There is nothing that stands out about this song apart from the beat which may have worked better with an artist like French or Rick Ross as I feel like a second appearance from Meek wasn't all the way necessary.

18. Shanghai
I am not a huge fan of the production for this song, which we have Yung Berg to thank for, because it is trying too hard to be innovative and exciting but it didn't hit the spot for me. Having said that, I like everything else about the song especially Nicki's flow and diction but it doesn't have the same effect that it would have with a stronger beat.

19. Win Again
Another boring, irrelevant song that is underproduced and delivers a repetitive and irritating chorus and not much else. This song is instantly forgettable.

20. Mona Lisa
The first and only song on the album that successfully brings us something different. Nicki experiments on Mona Lisa with a slightly trippy sound, which I enjoy hearing in hip-hop music. I could have done with a little less production on the vocals and it may have been interesting to have a melody change towards the end; however, it is still an interesting song.

21. Put You In A Room
I love the lyrics in this song, it makes a nice change from Nicki's usual provocative and playful verses. Although it is never made clear whether Nicki is addressing a person or a mental struggle, it still hits quite hard. It does get a little stale as the song goes on which makes it understandable as to why it's one of the shorter tracks on the album.

22. Truffle Butter feat. Drake and Lil Wayne
This is by far my favourite song on the album so its unfortunate that it comes as a bonus track and the last one at that.
It samples a 2010 house anthem by Maya Jane Cole which is the highlight of the song. It also showcases Nicki, Drake and Lil Wayne at their best - all starting their verse with 'thinking out loud' implying that a freestyle follows, and if so, then that is where they work well together.
This would make a great single and an even better club song.

So my overall opinion of the album isn't so great after all the hype Nicki has put around it. She promised she would go back to her mixtape sound that we all fell in love with and teased that with tracks like Lookin' Ass N***a and Boss Ass Bitch (Remix) but this album does not fulfil that promise.
Although Nicki plays around with voices and accents far less, which is a massive improvement, she replaces them with reflective ballads and boring melodies.
I am disappointed that on a 22 track album there are only ten tracks I like and only four of those that I love. There are some great collaborations and potential singles and Nicki as a rapper, particularly lyrically, is amazing but I was expecting a lot more from this album.

New Video : Jhene Aiko

Jhene's album was one of the best this year and I would love a visual for every single song so I was very happy yesterday when she released a video for Wading.
I am no 100% sure I grasp the deeper meaning of the video or the connection it has to the lyrics in the song but I still enjoyed it. In simple terms, Jhene plays a dancer in a seedy bar (and looks gorgeous whilst doing it) where a strange guy drops a pill into her drink. Before she has a chance to drink it another strange man interrupts and the two men begin a very choreographed martial arts fight until the SWAT storm into the club and then things get even more violent.
As always, Jhene delivers an entertaining visual and although, at first, it was shocking to see Jhene writhing sexily against a wall and scantily-clad at least there is a solid reason behind it.

New Video | Only by Nicki Minaj feat. Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne

After a controversial lyric video, Nicki Minaj has released the official video for her new single Only and it is far from what I expected.
A typical Nicki video is quirky, fun and entertaining but this one takes a much darker turn from the outset with bloodied and beaten bodies and a dangerous setting. It has no connection with the actual lyrics of the song and has no plot or meaning that I can find.
The only positive is that Nicki looks amazing as usual. Fortunately, the disappointing video doesn't make the song any less great.

Introducing || Rochelle Jordan

With new female artists being an ongoing theme of success this year (I mean just look at Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, Tinashe, Ella Henderson and Jhene Aiko) it is going to be tough for another female to bring it in 2015.
But Rochelle Jordan (ROJO) seems to be rising to the challenge of making a name for herself in the r'n'b music industry.
She has been making moves for a while with a 2011 EP and opening for Jessie Ware on tour in 2013 but now the Canadian born singer/songwriter is stepping out having just dropped her debut album 1021 this week...and it's a goodun'.
There is something very reminiscent of Aaliyah in her sound which is something this generation of music is missing, so let's see what she can bring in the new year.

New Music : Teairra Marie

Aside from her current stint on Love and Hip Hop Hollywood, Teairra Marie has been on the quiet side these past few years. But, as you may have seen on the show, she is ready to get back to her music and after a studio session with Yung Berg, she has graced us with a new track called Deserve.
TT sounds as good as she always has and the song is decent and quite catchy but it isn't good enough to make her stand out from the other female artists flying the flag at the moment.
Teairra has attitude and a fire that makes her original and if it can translate into her music along with that voice then she could really spark a brand new music career.
Having said that, this song is a nice starting point as a showcase for her talent.

New Video : Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani is most definitely back and she has a new music video for her single Spark The Fire. She has teamed up with super producer Pharrell Williams to create the energetic number that reminds me a little of Wind It Up, only more repetitive and less catchy.
The video is fun too with its cartoon element and Gwen looking hot as always.

Songs of the Month | November 2014

So, in an attempt to make more regular posts and features, I have decided that at the end of every month I will post three or four of my favourite songs that month.
They don't necessarily have to be songs that were released that month so these posts will include old and new tracks that I have been loving that month.

Don't Tell 'Em - Jeremih feat. YG

I discovered this song a little late, and only because of Lorde's cover on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge a couple of weeks ago. I loved her rendition and I love the original version and all of the various remixes floating around - I feel totally out of the loop with this one.
It goes to show how my lack of nights out and clubbing have impacted my ability to keep up with music.

Jane Doe - Alicia Keys

This song is more of a rediscovery on my part after stumbling upon some Alica Keys classics on Youtube. I remember my mum having the Songs In A Minor album and listening to it many years ago and this was the song that stuck out to me for some reason.
The catchy hook, relatable lyrics and attitude really got me and this remains one of my favourite Alicia Keys songs even though it is only an album track.
Fun fact : This song was co-written by Kandi Burruss of Real Housewives of Atlanta fame.

Standing On The Sun Remix - Beyonce

What is a month of music without a little Beyonce. The platinum edition of her most recent album delivered quite a few gems but one of them has been overshadowed by her fabulous video for 711.
Her remix for Standing On The Sun which features Mr. Vegas and a lot of dancehall epicness is a beautiful ballad with some flare.
I would love to see a video or performance to this track because it deserves more recognition.

2014 AMA Performances

It's that time of year again ! Late November marks the beginning of award season and it all starts with the American Music Awards which took place last night. As some of music's biggest starts gather to collect their awards, what we really look forwards to are the show-stopping, entertaining and often controversial musical performances.
Here is a summary of some of the shows biggest performances last night...

Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Christina Milian, Skylar Grey

Young lovers Lil Wayne and Christina Milian open the performance with a potential new song about their love. It could have been cute but it wasn't. I found it quite awkward and unnecessary - Lil Wayne is better than that - however, I will give credit to the song which sounds quite good.
Then out comes Skylar Grey and Nicki Minaj with a performance of Bed of Lies which wasn't anything special but it is a nice song.

Fergie

Fergie hit the stage and it's like she has never been away. She performed her latest single L.A Love alongside DJ Mustard and YG, and hit the choreography and rap with ease. She looked amazing too.

Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea

J-Lo, as always, delivered a sexy and energetic performance to her song Booty alongside her friend Iggy Azalea. The girls looked hot and J-Lo really showed these young girls how to command a stage and an audience with her closing dance number.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj

The ultimate girl power trio reunited on the AMA stage, this time with no wardrobe malfunctions, and slayed the audience with Bang Bang. Jessie and Ariana were pitch perfect as expected and Nicki looked fierce so it was an all-round success this time.

Iggy Azalea

Iggy also took the stage solo (well, with Charlie XCX) to perform Fancy and newest single Beg For It. It was a bit lacklustre in parts and she didn't show any power or aggression in her verses, maybe because she was more concerned with hitting all her spots, but she did well considering that she is still a newcomer.

Ariana Grande

Ariana took the stage for a second time alongside The Weeknd for a sultry performance of Problem, Break Free and Love Me Harder. She looked beautiful and Jessica Rabbit-esque as she belted out her pop hits but with a jazzy rendition for originality. Then the performance hotted up for the sexy Love Me Harder. All in all, Ariana proved that she is not a teeny-bopper anymore and The Weeknd sounded superb.

Sam Smith

One of this years biggest newcomers, Sam Smith sang to perfection with a stunning vocal on Not The Only One but added a nice surprise with a verse from A$AP Rocky. Although they may not be a musical duo that would ever come to mind, it actually worked really well and this remixed version needs to be released.

Selena Gomez

Before anything, I need to address how beautiful Selena looked while performing on stage last night. An angelic look for an angelic performance.
Selena performed her ballad The Heart Wants What It Wants, which is not-so-secretly a song about her relationship with Justin Beiber. Understandably, Sel got a little emotional as she sang but that made the performance all the more mesmerising.

New Video : Beyonce

Another great day for music as Beyonce builds up to the release of the platinum edition of her self-titled album. Two new songs from the album leaked a couple of days ago but Beyonce, always one step ahead, almost immediately dropped the seemingly home-made video on her website.
The song, 7/11, is a fun, uptempo club track that has elements of the current trend trap music, in its repetitive and simple lyrics along with the strong hip-hop beat. It may be an unusual sound for the Queen of R'n'B but she pulls it off because the song may just be one of my favourites.
The video is also a revelation. We see Beyonce dancing around her bathroom, bedroom and in corridors with her friends as she drinks alcohol and dresses up in some of her most infamous red carpet dresses.
It is always entertaining and refreshing to see King Bey having fun and not in such a huge production like most of her music videos.

New Music : Meek Mill

Even from behind bars, Meek Mill can drop some pretty catchy club anthems and FYM is just that. What it lacks in substance and originality it makes up for in other areas which is pretty much the recipe for all Meek Mill songs.
Although this may never see mainstream success (based on the explictives alone), I am sure this will be playing in all the clubs by the end of the month.

Album Review | Teyana Taylor : VII

Many would say Teyana Taylor is underrated in the music industry because, although the girl is talented and hard-working, she has never quite reached her potential. The music has never been that great and she seems more dedicated to other artistic avenues and media drama than her singles.
However, her debut album VII may just silence any haters or doubters and finally prove that fans have a point when they call her the underdog.
I wasn't expecting much, if anything, from the album but I was pleasantly surprised to discover a smooth and genuine R'n'B album that may just be my favourite of the year.

1. Outta My League (Interlude)
I am kind of annoyed this is just an interlude and not the opening song because it sounds so different from everything else on the album and would have really stood out as a full-length song.
Teyana is making a statement about what is to come for the next eleven tracks, and it promises to be some real heavy R'n'B.

2. Just Different
This song grew on me over time and it now stands strong as the opening track. It reminds me of a smoke-filled bar with dimmed lights and a sultry R'n'B singer on the stage which is not a bad thing at all. The production is beautiful and really does transport you to another place and another time.

3. Request
Teyana continues the authentic, old school R'n'B sound with this sexy slow jam. This really takes me back to the early noughties in terms of simple yet effective production and soothing vocals to create a pleasant, laid-back bedroom song.

4. Do Not Disturb feat. Chris Brown
No surprises here that Chris Brown is featured on the album as a long-time friend and fan of the songstress. This track is yet another slow jam but there is a bit more tempo and production which prevents the sultry sound established thus far from becoming overused or tired.
Chris sounds great on his verse and this would make for a great single and video.

5. Broken-Hearted Girl feat. Fabolous
This may just be one of my favourites on the album thanks to Fabs strong verse and the catchy hook; it is a track that gets stuck in your head well after hearing it.
There is an element of vulnerability in Teyana's vocals which is rather endearing and easy for many girls to relate to.

6. It Could Just Be Love (Interlude)
Another brief interlude which seems to act as a break in the album separating the previous five songs from what is to follow.
It is unfortunate that this song is only an interlude because it has potential to be a strong full length song; however, the musicality is carried out so well on the song that it works as an interlude too.

7. Put Your Love On
Teyana tries her hand at some reggae with this stunning mid-tempo track, and she pulls it off well. Unfortunately, the song is over in less than three minutes which is very disappointing because it would have been the strongest song on the album but it doesn't quite reach its full potential in the short track time it has.

8. Maybe feat. Pusha T and Yo Gotti
Another firm favourite on the album for me which confirms a marked change in pace on the album as this showcases the side of Teyana we are more accustomed too. There is the soft R'n'B vocals paired with a strong hip-hop beat and rap verses from Yo Gotti and label-mate Pusha T.
I love the haunting vocals on the verse juxtaposed with the thuggish attack on the hook and chorus. It is easy to see why this was chosen as the first single.

9. Dreams
This song leaked a little while back and gave me high hopes for the album and I am glad that it remained a part of the final product because it fits in well.
Dreams references a French Montana song throughout in a humorous and amusing way creating an all-round fun and flirty track. It may not stand out amongst other songs but it delves into another side of Teyana that shouldn't be misconstrued as cockiness.

10. Sorry
I adore the acoustic piano that opens this track and the melody throughout this song remains understated yet powerful and emotive. This is a stunning ballad which truly showcases Teyana's talent as a writer and vocalist in a very subtle way.

11. Business
Business may be my least favourite song on the album but that is only because it is competing with some of the best R'n'B music I have heard in a while.
The song is forgettable and doesn't hit as heavy as her previous slow jams which I feel is down to the lazy beat. There are promising moments such as the three seconds of acapella and the short-lived rap but, all in all, the song falls short on such a strong album.

12. In The Air
The only flaw with this song is that it is far too short, much like Put Your Love On, and misses its chance of being a favourite.
Aside from that, In The Air is another R'n'B moment for T with a catchy hook and chorus, solid production and sultry vocals. This is the album closer on the non-deluxe version and I completely understand why it has that position because it finishes off the album in an assured way.

13. Outta My League
I was so happy to see that the opening interlude is a full track on the deluxe version because it is such a mesmerising song. It reminds me so much of early Alicia Keys, vocally, lyrically and production-wise, and who doesn't love some 2000 Alicia.
The subject matter is almost unheard, a girl declaring that the guy who loves her is out of her league and questioning why he is even with her, something I am sure most girls can relate to at some point.

14. It Could Just Be Love
Once again, another beloved interlude has been made into a full song and I couldn't be happier - other artists should take a note out of Teyana's book.
As with every other song on the album, Teyana sounds great and the song is ridiculously catchy and sexy.

Teyana has truly outdone any expectations and every other R'n'B album this year because this album is near flawless. There are no filler songs or tracks that could be considered 'skippable' because it seems as though T has put a lot of time and effort into every minute of this album.
This deserves a lot more success than I fear it may receive because as far as R'n'B music in this day and ages goes, no one has delivered anything as endearing, authentic or exciting as VII.
Rating : 5/5

New Video : Fergie

Fergie's comeback hit, L.A. Love, has been making the rounds for a few weeks and now it finally has a video to accompany it.
The video is pretty much how I imagined it would be - Fergie looking hot, partying with friends and breaking out a little choreography. The video is fun, colourful and filled with some surprising celebrity appearances which she shouts out at the end.
If you weren't a fan of the song before, you will be now. Fergie, welcome back !

Weekly Round-Up | A Week Of Women Dropping Surprises

This week has been filled with surprises in the world of music and the first came from outspoken rapper, Azealia Banks. After three years of anticipation, Azealia dropped her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste unannounced on Thursday. It has received high praise from fans and critics which I can understand as the album is a courageous step for any musician with experimental sounds, bold attitude and impressive lyrics. However, the album is not to my personal taste and I was a bit let down what with Azealia having made amazing songs such as 212, Liquorice and 1991.

The surprises continued with an unexpected musical release from pop princess, Selena Gomez, who has been quite on the musical front for over a year. What was even more shocking was that the subject matter for her new song was very clearly about her rocky relationship with Justin Beiber. The Heart Wants What It Wants is a really personal and vulnerable song, as is the endearing video that goes with it and, although it was made almost a year ago, the lyrics couldn't ring any truer for the young star.
It is nice to hear a softer side to her and that she is, at last, opening up about a topic that has been making headlines for years.

There were more album releases this week from two other female artists whose music couldn't be more different. Teyana Taylor released her album, VII, at the top of the week to much critical acclaim. The album is brilliant, innovative and authentic, and Teyana has found herself a new fan in me - a more detailed, track-by-track review will be available on my blog tomorrow.
On the other hand, Cheryl Cole didn't deliver such a stellar album although I am sure it will still be a commercial success. She seems to have taken a step back in terms of musicality and there is no growth or excitement in any of the songs on the album. In fact, the only two tracks worth listening to have already been released as singles so the album was a disappointment to say the least.

New Video : Ariana Grande

Ariana is not done with dominating the charts and music industry this year as she drops her third single from her latest album. Love Me Harder features The Weeknd and discusses a lot of explicit and sexual topics which is a huge leap from the innocent and good girl image Ariana has created as a Nickelodeon star.
The video takes it even further as Ariana explores a more mature image with her hair down (yay) and provocative and suggestive movements as she lays on the ground. It may come as a bit of a shock and will no doubt garner some controversy but I like the fact that Ariana is ditching that child star, playful image and acting her age now.

New Music : Nicki Minaj

Sadly, Nicki announced last week that her album release date will be pushed back four whole weeks but to keep us satisfied she dropped a new song featuring Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne. Only is a lyrically strong and provocative hip-hop song which sees Nicki at her best and delivering what many of her day one fans have been waiting for, that mixtape Minaj.
Chris' chorus is ridiculously catchy and I can definitely hear this being a club banger before the year is up so get ready to twerk to this one on New Years.

Album Review | Danity Kane : DK3

After a reality show, two hit albums, a very public break-up, a reconciliation with four of the five members, one member bowing out and then another complete split, this is the finale to the Danity Kane story. They had so much potential and were at the top back in 2008 and the second time around was looking to be just as successful; however, these girls just don't seem to be meant for each other. They are all sassy and opinionated which translates in their music but, unfortunately, doesn't go down well outside of the studio.
DK3 is the girls goodbye and with such a major weight on this album, it had better be a good one.

Rhythm of Love
The album doesn't get off to the best of starts with quite a weak opening track that leaves little to be desired. It is too dance/pop for my liking and seems to alienate a lot of the original Danity Kane fans.

Lemonade feat. Tyga
I was instantly a fan of this song and I am glad that it was the lead single although it, unfortunately, never got a real release or a music video. It is a great R'n'B club track that shows the progression these ladies have made since their break up back in 2009. The lyrics are full of the attitude that got these girls where they are today and the chorus is ridiculously catchy.

All In A Day's Work
All In A Day's Work is the ultimate girl power anthem and could have easily been the follow-up single. I think this is a strong R'n'B song; however, fans have pointed out that the version with Aundrea as lead vocalist was a lot stronger. Having said that, this isn't necessarily a vocal heavy song so that doesn't take anything away from the song.

Rage
This sounds very much like an unreleased Katy Perry song and not a Danity Kane track at all. There is no sass and the R'n'B sound that these girls are known for is completely missing. The lyrics are unoriginal and weak and the chorus is persistent and annoying. This is definitely my least favourite track on the album.

Tell Me
This song brings me back to the original five piece Danity Kane which is never a bad thing. Tell Me is a really sexy mid-tempo song that could have also been another hit single.
I think the production is in perfect keeping with the lyrics and the girls deliver their infamous sultry vocals with power. This may be my favourite song on the album.

Two Sides
I feel like this ballad is missing something and I can't quite put my finger on it but it does sound very unfinished. I enjoyed the lead in of Tell Me into Two Sides but I was waiting for the song to go somewhere and it never did.
The vocals are nice but nothing ground-breaking, the lyrics are weak and the production is basic at best. If the girls were aiming for a laid-back acoustic feel then it didn't hit the mark this time. With a piano or some stronger production this could have been a really powerful ballad.

Secret Lover
I am still unsure about this song and it might end up growing on me with a few more listening sessions. I like the harmonies and individual vocals but I feel like this song had the potential to be something more.

Roulette
Yet again, the girls are missing something to make the track that much better and more powerful. The verses are great in terms of production and melody but then it loses itself on the hooks and chorus and becomes a mediocre pop song. This probably should have just been a bonus track or a b-side and not an album track.

Pieces
Finally the girls have a ballad that almost lives up to the greatness of some of the love songs on their previous albums. The harmonies are stunning and the vocals are almost perfect and it only saddens me that there were not enough slower tracks like this on the album.

Bye Baby
Another early leak that has been updated since the departure of Aundrea and I think I like this version a bit better.
A fun and throwback-ish R'n'B song with originality, attitude and power - everything that was missing on 90% of the album.

I am really disappointed with the end product that the girls are bowing out on because with Lemonade and Bye Baby setting the expectations, I really believed that this album would be one of their best. But, whether it was the issues within the group or the sudden split, this album is lacking in many areas and feels rushed and incomplete.
I hope that wasn't the case because that means that the girls' true potential was never reached and we will never get the Danity Kane comeback/goodbye album we, as fans, deserved.
Rating: 2/5 (only because 5 out of the ten songs are really strong otherwise it would have been a 1)

Album Review : Mila J E.P

Mila J has started to step out of her sister's, Jhene Aiko, shadow this year following the success of her single Smoke, Drink, Break-Up. She has proven that she can sing, dance and perform as well as look every inch the pop star, so does her E.P, Made In L.A, continue to showcase her potential as the next female R'n'B superstar.

1. My Main feat. Ty Dolla $ign
I am not that impressed with this track, which is also Mila's latest single, as it lacks any originality in the production. The theme of the song is cute - Mila is giving a shout out to her best friend - and makes a nice change from the overly discussed topics love, heartbreak, sex and partying.
But this doesn't set Mila apart from the hundreds of other young female singers trying to make a name for themselves in the industry.

2. Champion feat. B.o.B
This song is definitely an improvement from the first with a catchy hook, a sexy melody and solid production. Although it could be considered a bit vulgar, it is not much different from the male R'n'B singers, such as Chris Brown, Trey Songz and August Alsina, are doing in their music it just comes as a bit more of a surprise when being sung by a female. However, I feel a bit of empowerment in the sentiment of the song but that is just my interpretation.

3. Times Like These
Upon first listen, I was slightly bored as there is no change in the melody or pace of this song which makes it a bit bold. However, after watching the video (which breaks the song up between acted songs) the lyrics and vocals really shine through making it a stronger ballad than what it is on the E.P. All it needs is less production on the verses and then the beat can come in at the chorus to add a bit more structure to the song.

4. Pain In My Heart feat. Problem
By far my favourite song on the E.P. and, in my opinion, should have been the follow-up single instead of My Main. The vocals, particularly on the chorus, are really stunning and melodic which bring the song to life emotionally. The lyrics are touching, easy to relate to and vulnerable and the production is unlike any R'n'B ballad I have heard in the past five or so years.
This is definitely the route Mila J is strongest in and she should embrace this side of her music a lot more when it comes to her debut album.

5. Smoke, Drink, Break-Up
The song we have all heard and love by now, and rightfully so, as this really shines amongst some of the lacklustre tracks on this E.P.
Vocally, Mila almost sounds like another person on this track and she plays with her raspy and more aggressive tones which works because it makes her voice distinctive. The beat and production is brilliant on this song and this is almost an A+ in terms of R'n'B music, all that is missing in the French Montana feature.

Overall, this E.P was a slight disappointment because it was Mila's opportunity to grab the attention of critics, fans and the media and get them on side, excited for her upcoming debut album.
However, aside from some great vocals and the stunning Pain In My Heart, Mila didn't really showcase her individuality or her strengths as an artist. She fell short on the first three tracks and didn't have enough time to bring herself back afloat.
Hopefully, she learns from this E.P. and makes better choices in order to create a more distinctive album.

New Video : Wretch 32

Wretch 32 has been under the radar for quite some time now after much success with his debut album, but now he is back with his new single, 6 Words.
It's a cute song and a cute video with a great hook and a lot of potential to be another hit single. I love that Wretch isn't afraid to separate himself from the stereotype of grime artists by discussing sentimental and heartfelt topics in his music.

New Video : Elle Varner

I adore Elle Varner and her soothing, soulful vocals and honest R'n'B music but her latest single is showing a new side to the singer/songwriter.
Fuck It All is clearly not your typical Elle break-up song and the video vouches for that too. Elle catches her boyfriend cheating and decides to hide the fact and go away with him for a few days. It soon all gets too much for her and things go quite dark for an R'n'B music video, that being said, I love the story being told and Elle's acting is on point.
As I have always said, I really enjoy videos that narrate a relevant and captivating story, and this is one of them.

Album Review | Tinashe : Aquarius

Tinashe is a star in the making with a hit single under her belt already and a second single dropping last month. She has proved she can sing and dance and she certainly looks every inch the superstar but does she have the great music to go with it.
Her debut album, Aquarius, is released this week and has created a big buzz around the web already with many calling it one of the best albums of the year. A massive statement for a singer who has only just reached her twenties and has yet to score a number 1.
So here is my opinion on the 18 track album, without including the interludes (although they are not completely irrelevant and annoying like other people's)...

1. Aquarius
The title-track and album opener so there is a lot riding on this song, and it doesn't disappoint. Tinashe delivers sultry vocals, a heavy bass and a sexy rhythm and lyrics making it the perfect r'n'b jam. She successfully establishes an individual sound for herself in a competitive and heavily saturated female market.

2. Bet feat. Dev Hynes
Tinashe continues with this eerie r'n'b slow jam sound that is very similar to Tinashe's mixtape songs. The production on the chorus is really strong and innovative and truly stands out amongst the often repetitive music being played on the radio today.
The outro to the song includes a guitar solo which adds a beautiful musicality to the album that separates Tinashe from her fellow female artists.

3. Cold Sweat
Another sultry vocal from Tinashe which hasn't gotten tired yet. Even though each song is very similar in production and content, it is executed so well that it doesn't really matter. It seems authentic and, as I said before, really establishes individuality for this new female artist.
Outro, once again, takes a different turn keeping the intrigue on this five minute long track.

4. 2 On feat. Schoolboy Q
The popular debut single is still a catchy club hit and fits in quite nicely at this point in the album as the pace changes from soft and subtle to more uptempo and heavy-hitting.
It is a great song destined for mainstream success and offers Tinashe a chance to showcase her fun, party side and bring some energy and dance routines to stage, performance-wise.

5. How Many Times feat. Future
Yet another song with sexual lyrics, it is fast becoming Tinashe's go to subject which is understandable since she is a very attractive young lady and her vocals sit perfectly between sultry and soulful so it feels comfortable. I am admittedly not a fan of Future's flow on his verse, it is far too aggressive and does not fit with the song at all. It almost became comedic to here him shout 'tun up, tun up' after the beautiful and soft vocals from Tinashe.

6. Pretend feat. A$AP Rocky
Unlike the last feature, A$AP makes a very welcome appearance on this track. This song is an album favourite of mine - I love the heartfelt and relatable lyrics, the trippy production and the stunning vocal from Tinashe.
I think I fell it love with it more after seeing the video last week and really understanding the lyrics a lot more.

7. All Hands on Deck
Another change of pace and a short break from the sensual slow jams with this 2 On part 2 style track. All Hands on Deck is a fun dance track but nothing too exciting and it gets quite old quickly. A very forgettable track when wedged between some real great pieces of work.

8. Far Side of the Moon
This really reminds me of Jhene Aiko, which I am sure is a comparison Tinashe will hear a lot of after this album is released. Vocally, she sounds really different on this song but still brilliant and the production is just stellar on this particular song.
I love the melody of the chorus, the metaphor in the lyrics and the overall product that has been created, this comes in a very close second as my favourite song on the album.

9. Feels Like Vegas
A solid mid-tempo track that you are likely to hear at a high-end strip club, which is a compliment and says a lot about the melody of the song. One of the few songs on the album that could be another hit single because of its mainstream vibe without losing the authenticity of Tinashe as an artist.

10. Thug Cry
A Mike.Will.Made.It production, and after the success he has had these past couple of years, expectations for this song are high. Unfortunately it fell short. I wouldn't say it's a terrible song but, with the bar so high on this album, it doesn't quite live up to what else has been delivered up until this point.
It has grown on me since my first listen but there is still something missing from it that doesn't make it quite as memorable or captivating as the rest of the album.

11. Bated Breath
I feel like this is the first ballad on the album because it shares a vulnerability and honesty that makes Tinashe even more likeable. There are some really powerful and promising vocal moments from Tinashe proving that she may be no Beyonce or Ariana Grande but she can certainly sing.

12. Wildfire
As the closing number on the album, I hoped Tinashe would opt to go out with a bang seeing as though the majority of her album is mid-tempo, mellow yet production heavy. A fun dance number would have been perfect but Tinashe, instead, chose Wildfire, a mediocre pop song with no conclusive or memorable moment.
It is never clever to end your album so lacklustre especially when it has been ridiculously strong up until this point. Although it is worth mentioning the closing 30 seconds were a nice addition.

Overall, the album is amazing by the standards of other debut female r'n'b vocalists and in comparison to most r'n'b music being put out today regardless of gender. Early Tinashe fans will be very pleased that this album stays true the artist that T established herself as on her mixtapes and doesn't cross over too much into the commercial, dance sound that she experimented with on 2 On.
I was pleasantly surprised with almost every song on Aquarius and this could be the start of a very successful career for Tinashe if she continues along this sensual and slick R'n'B path.
